Did you know that by starting your day with protein, it can not only help curb your appetite but it’s one of the easiest ways to effectively lose weight?
As many of you know, I am a big fan of breakfast. It’s my favorite meal of the day and I am a sucker for a good veggie omelet with all the goodies in it. But did you know that by starting your day with protein, it can not only help curb your appetite but it’s one of the easiest ways to effectively lose weight?
We now know that the myth of skipping breakfast to lose weight isn’t effective at all. Skipping breakfast has been linked to weight gain or no change in weight. If anything, the quality of the breakfast is what dictates how the body will function throughout the day along with how it will metabolize the food. High sugar breakfast items can cause spikes in blood sugar levels, leaving us feeling lethargic or brain fog by the afternoon. If we switch our breakfast to good quality protein, it can keep our blood sugars stable and allow us to function better. Everyone can benefit from good quality breakfasts. For example, it can improve mental performance in school for children and teenagers.
Other reasons why starting your day with good quality protein is effective, is that protein itself is very robust. By consuming it, the body uses more calories to metabolize it, keeping us feeling fuller longer along with burning calories at rest. One study showed that by increasing protein from 15 to 30% of total calories help them eat 441 fewer calories per day. This resulted in 11 pound weight loss in just 12 weeks. Another is that eating protein-rich breakfast can help reduce craving later in the day, preventing you from late night snacking on unhealthy stuff. Another study had two groups eat the same amount of calories for breakfast but one group had a protein-rich breakfast while the other group had a carb-rich breakfast. The group that ate the protein-rich breakfast not only lost weight but had a 34% greater reduction in waist measurement.
So what can you do to create more protein-rich breakfasts in the morning? Add things like eggs which are incredibly nutritious and high in protein, stir fried tofu, greek yogurt with raw honey and berries or even make a morning smoothie with supplement protein, fruit, spinach and almond milk.
